The Woodsmen Match Day Function Report
Round 22 – Collingwood v Geelong
The Woodsmen turned out in great force for our second last Match Day Function for the year.
Amongst the Coterie members were special guests Tony Shaw, Neville Shaw, Rene Kink, Dennis Banks and Peter Moore.
Whilst The Woodsmen were served their main course, Darren James interviewed the 1990 Collingwood Premiership Captain, Norm Smith Medallist, 313 game Collingwood Football Club Hall of Fame member, Tony Shaw.
Tony commenced his interview thanking The Woodsmen for all of their support during his playing career – “The Woodsmen were a great support to me. I’ll never forget the support and how I was treated with respect. Thank you”.
He discussed Woodsmen sponsored player Josh Daicos on debut and how it was great that the day’s line-up included names such as Brown, Daicos and Moore, sons of his former teammates.
The 1990 premiership was of course a big topic of discussion. Tony gave The Woodsmen some insight into that day and recalled the quarter time speech given by Leigh Matthews which helped to spur him and the team on.
“It was the greatest relief of my life when that final siren went” Tony said as the Coterie laughed in agreement.
Collingwood got off to a strong start against Geelong leading at half time before Geelong kicked away in the second half to win the match 9.5 (55), 10.10 (70).
Josh Daicos showed plenty of promise on debut totalling 10 possessions including one goal assist.
Our last function of the year will be held Saturday 26 August when Collingwood take on Melbourne at the MCG.
